The cyclical shift into autumn is nearing, and the days are getting shorter. Summer is coming to an end, and to my system it feels like an intense rush of energy. This is also the first year my daughter is attending school, and with kindergarten comes a brand-new routine. The transition began about three weeks ago, and we are still ironing out some of the uncomfortable shifts we feel as a family.


The Weight of New Experiences

Navigating this new world of experiences—with its pressures and demands—is exhausting. My daughter is asking deeper questions about the world, while still holding the sweet innocence of curiosity. I notice her body’s awareness of being over-informed and overstimulated. I also notice the power of my own presence—the way I can help calm her nervous system after a full day of loud noises, crowds, and too much time spent performing for others. I share this with respect to the school system we chose for her. I intend to remain neutral as I offer these reflections as a new mom with a child in kindergarten.


Breathing as a Tool


One self-regulating tool my daughter and I return to again and again is breathing into our bodies. We do this together when a tantrum arises, when big feelings surface, when going to the bathroom feels challenging, before bedtime, and in the mornings when we’re both tired and reluctant to get moving. Coming back to the breath is such a powerful way to regulate the nervous system. And truly, this simple practice can support anyone—not just moms with kids going back to school.


The Power of CranioSacral Therapy
