TMJ Symptoms Aren't Just About the Jaw
If you struggle with jaw tension, TMJ clicking, headaches, facial tightness, or pressure
around the temples, you’re not alone. I see this pattern often, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping people understand what’s really happening in the body.
Many people believe TMJ care starts at the jaw. In reality, the jaw is often responding to
tension patterns in the neck, skull, pelvis, and nervous system.
This is where CranioSacral Therapy (CST) can be incredibly supportive.
How CranioSacral Therapy Supports TMJ Relief
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) works gently with the cranial bones, fascia, and nervous system to help the body release deep, often long-held patterns of tension. Rather than forcing change, this approach supports the body in unwinding restrictions naturally and at its own pace.
Because the jaw is closely connected to the skull, neck, and surrounding soft tissues, tension in these areas can directly influence how the TMJ functions. When the cranial bones and fascial system begin to soften and regain subtle movement, there is often a noticeable shift: less pressure, more ease, and greater freedom in the jaw.
CST also works with the nervous system, which plays a key role in patterns of clenching, guarding, and chronic tightness. As the body moves out of a stress or protective state, it becomes more receptive to releasing tension and restoring balance.
Before working directly with the jaw, I often begin with gentle techniques that help the body feel safe and supported. This might include subtle work around the base of the skull, the neck, or the diaphragm - areas that influence circulation, fluid movement, and nervous system regulation. Creating this foundation allows the jaw to respond more easily, rather than forcing change in an already guarded system.
From this place, deeper work with the jaw becomes more effective, more comfortable, and more sustainable.
Simple At-Home Techniques for TMJ Relief
Here are a few foundational self-care techniques you can try:
Front of the Neck Stretch This helps open the thoracic inlet — an important pathway for circulation and fluid drainage between the head and body. Creating space here can reduce pressure patterns that influence the jaw and head.
Ear Pull Release A gentle traction of the ears supports the temporal bones, cranial fascia, and the dural system. Many people notice a calming effect through the head and nervous system when this area softens.
Sphenoid Release The sphenoid sits deep behind the temples and plays a key role in cranial balance. Gentle support here can help soften tension around the temples while supporting the eyes and pituitary region.
To help you go a little deeper, I’ve created two short videos where I demonstrate simple, effective techniques you can practice at home. In these videos, you’ll learn:
• How to massage the jaw muscles
• How to gently stretch the zygomatic arch
• How to release the muscles used for chewing and smiling
• Gentle compression and decompression for the TMJ joint
• A pterygoid release to help the deeper jaw muscles soften and reset
My passion is helping people reconnect with their bodies and understand why symptoms
happen, not just temporarily relieve them. When we support the nervous system and cranial structures, the body often has an incredible ability to find its way back toward balance.
